I used liquid watercolour paint (I linked to the exact brand that I used in the list above). The secret, hidden pattern magically appears! I bought a pack of 12 white oil pastels (the link to the exact ones I used is in the materials list above) when I made the Northern Lights Art Project last week, so I had lots to work with! And I’m LOVING how our projects have looked when you paint over the white oil pastel with watercolour! You could even use coloured crayons if you wanted to have even more colour and texture. We used oil pastels because it’s easier to see them on the white paper, but you can definitely use white crayon instead. Snowflakes, swirls, lines, dots, squigglies, zig zags – you can decorate it however you like! Start by drawing a creative pattern onto your hat. But other than that it worked really well! The paint didn’t soak through the card stock, and there wasn’t a lot of warping after the paper got wet with paint. I had to iron the paper after I printed the templates because my printer made it curl a bit. We used 65lb white card stock (the exact link to the type I used is in the list above). The paper was fine once it dried, but keep in mind that it does soak through. We tried painting on regular printer paper and the paint soaked right through and made a bit of a mess on the table. I recommend printing the template on heavier cardstock paper. Grab your free printable Kids Winter Hat Artwork Template here, or you can click on the image below to get the PDF. And I feel so bad, because last night was one of those nights that was GO GO GO. This division allows musicians to read and interpret the rhythm and timing of a piece more easily, facilitating accurate performance and coordination among multiple musicians. The primary purpose of a bar line is to visually organize the music, indicating where each measure begins and ends. It is represented by a vertical line drawn across the staff. Definition Of Bar LineĪ bar line, also known as a measure line, is a musical notation symbol used to divide a musical composition into equal sections called measures or bars. Now that we have established the purpose and significance of bar lines, let us delve deeper into the various ways in which you can incorporate this term into your sentences. By incorporating this term into your writing, you can effectively convey a sense of structure and organization. In writing, the phrase “bar line” can be used metaphorically to represent a clear division or break between different sections or ideas. So, what is the proper way to use bar line in a sentence? The term “bar line” refers to a vertical line that is used to separate measures in music notation. In this article, we will explore how to use bar line in a sentence, providing you with a clear understanding of its proper usage. However, bar lines can also be used in a different context – in writing. This will enrich your vision, as well as prepare you for varied repertoires from the point of view of rhythm.Bar lines are an essential element in music notation, serving as a visual guide that helps musicians keep track of the rhythm and structure of a piece. Read the article “ Rhythmic Analysis” in this website to practice your musicality in more complex time signatures. But there are countless possibilities for time signatures, so don’t just play “round” beats. In general, the most common time signature to appear in sheet music, undoubtedly, is 4/4. Some musical styles generally already assume what their time will be. You will notice that the measure is marking: the rhythm of the song, the way the instrumentalists are dividing the chords or, simply, the rhythmic pattern that the melody follows. Try to get some scores, listen to them and check their time signature. The beat set for the bar is related to the pulse that the song has. Let’s work on some examples of time signatures (take it as exercises) so that it becomes very clear how many notes fit in each measure:ħ/2 = Fits 7 half notes How to define a bar line in a song See the numbers that represent each note value in the denominator, in addition to the quarter note: Notice that the numerator of this fraction is saying that 4 notes can fit in a measure, and the denominator is saying that the note value is the quarter note, so the fraction 4/4 informs that 4 quarter notes can fit in one bar. The number 4 refers to the quarter note, so this is the reference figure. Informs which figure will serve as a reference for the analysis. This fraction 4/4 determined that a bar would have 4 quarter notes. Notice this fraction ( time signature) below, which appears at the beginning of the sheet music we have just analyzed: Time Signature Great, but what sets the time/length of a measure? Where is it written that each bar will have a length of 4 quarter notes? This reference only tells us the time that a bar involves, regardless of the figures that are there. Moral of the story: saying that “4 quarter notes can fit in one bar” does not mean that in one bar there can only be quarter note figures. The same is true for bars 1 and 3, which have other figures equivalent to the length of 4 quarter notes. There are several figures (quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and thirty-second notes) in it, but all of them together occupy the length of 4 quarter notes, so they stay within the same bar. In this example, pay attention to the second bar. This is the time interval defined for each bar, and there could be other figures in the middle, see: This means that 4 quarter notes can fit within each bar. In this example, what was the organization used for bars? It was to separate groups of 4 quarter notes. This time interval is represented by vertical bars, as in the example below (highlighted in orange) Example of Musical Bar Lines A Bar is a way to divide a song in equal time intervals, with the objective of organizing the structure and facilitating the orientation for the reader. There are three core techniques to embed images in HTML email:Ĭontent-ID (CID) refers to an email attachment that enables the integration of images or other files into the email body.Īs the email client presents the message, it utilizes the “CID” URL model to identify the attachment’s Content-ID and showcase the embedded image. Embed an Image in HTML EmailĮmbedding images directly in the HTML code of your email message can be a great way to create a visually appealing email. So your recipients can view the attachments easily. It is a straightforward process but with a file size limit.Įvery email client has its file upload limit.įor example, if you try to upload a file larger than 25MB for Gmail, it moves the file to the Google Drive link. You can include the image as a standalone file which doesn’t affect your HTML structure. Let’s look at how it can help you enhance the recipient experience. There are two basic ways to attach images to email messages: Try Startup App Try Slides App Other ProductsĮach MIME segment comes with a header specifying the content type (“ text/plain“, “ text/html“, “ image/jpeg“, or “ video/mp4“), encoding, and other metadata about the content. With Startup App and Slides App you can build unlimited websites using the online website editor which includes ready-made designed and coded elements, templates and themes. SMTP servers utilize the MIME standard when formatting emails that include multimedia elements. SMTP ( Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the method for transmitting email messages between servers. MIME ( Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a standard for formatting emails containing multimedia elements like images, audio, and video.īy encoding multimedia files as ASCII text and attaching them to messages, MIME enables emails to feature more than just plain text. Whenever we add multimedia, the involved element is called a MIME object. You can use it to create beautiful, engaging emails that capture your recipient’s attention.Įmbedding in HTML email is a simple process that requires no special skills or software if you know a little bit of code. It is similar to email newsletters but with the added ability to embed images directly into the body of the message. HTML email allows you to include images and other multimedia content in emails. Click 'Fill in' on the left, and the spaces in your chosen template will be populated with the uploaded pictures – cropped and resized to fit automatically. Once that’s done, click 'Collage', pick a template (those marked with a diamond icon are only available to premium account holders) and upload your pictures using the 'Import' button on the right. To get started, click 'Sign in' and either create a new account using your email address, or log in with Facebook (you’ll need an account in order to save your work as you move between tools). Premium membership also removes ads from the collage creator. All of Fotor’s essential features are free, with extras available for a subscription fee. The former will soon be phased out in favour of the latter, but they work the same way.įotor's design isn’t quite as intuitive as Canva’s, but it’s still much quicker and easier than creating a collage from first principles. There are currently two versions of Fotor’s free collage maker – one that uses Flash, and another built with HTML5. Beyond that, it’s a truly superb free collage maker. The only drawback of Canva is that you can’t set the resolution of the output file (although you do have a choice of standard or print-quality PDFs). You can even add crop marks and bleed space – an option that’s very useful for professional printing, and absent from most free collage makers. Once you’re done, you can save your collage as a printable PDF, PNG, or JPG file, or make it public for others to use. If you’ve chosen a grid layout, they will be resized and cropped to fit automatically. You can also add images from Facebook, or from Canva’s own library of free pictures. You can then drag them straight onto your collage canvas. To add your own pictures, click 'Uploads' and drag them from your desktop. Alternatively, click 'Elements' and choose a grid, then start adding the images, borders, icons, and other items that will make up your collage. Select 'Photo collage' then 'See all collage templates' to see the full set of free options available. Select "Personal use" and you’ll be presented with a menu of project types, including social media graphics, banners, book covers, and presentations. To begin, set a new username and password, or sign in with your Facebook or Google account. These are clearly marked, so there’s no need to worry about creating a design, then being unable to export it without parting with a handful of cash. Like all the other browser-based free collage makers here, most of Canva’s photo collage templates are free to use, but there are also premium designs available for a fee. It's great fun to use and easy to master, making it our top pick for the best free collage maker. You can also share it via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Tumblr, or even print it directly from the browser. Once you’ve finished, you can save your creation as a JPG or PNG file (there’s no PDF option) at a compression setting and size to suit you. There’s a good selection of backgrounds to choose from too (either plain colors, or tasteful geometric patterns), plus clip art and text. Once you’ve inserted an image you’ll be presented with a list of customizable Instagram-style filters to give your collage a bespoke look, plus advanced options for tweaking exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue. You can also adjust the spacing and roundness of the boxes, and pick an aspect ratio for your canvas.Ĭlick 'Add photos', then drag and drop them into the template. Those marked with a crown are available to premium account holders only, but you can resize the image frames in any grid, so this isn't much of a drawback. To get started, click 'Collage' and choose either a grid or an illustrated design (in our opinion a simple grid-based layout shows off your photos better). Although Ars Technica warns that “the update was the second time in four months that an automatic Android update broke some Pixel phones… Those issues all make updating a Pixel phone a scary proposition lately.”Īnd while that update issue relates to Pixel phones, Samsung has its own issues, as SamMobile explains. Apparently, the update has been fixed and is rolling back out to devices.”īut at least now-as of this weekend-it appears to be fixed. The now-infamous update originally rolled out at the beginning of January but was pulled after it started locking users out of their phone's local storage. A reliance on device OEMs to make much of this work, leaves Google without the same levers of control as Apple, and it shows.Īnd in a twist of timing, we are seeing this very issue play out at the moment.Īs Ars Technica reported this weekend, “we're a third of the way through February, but Android's January 2024 Google Play System update is just now rolling out. The nature of Android’s fragmented ecosystem has always lagged materially behind Apple’s command and control structure when it comes to keeping devices updated and responding to real time issues. The issue, though, is that it requires a better software and security update process than exists today. Google’s focus and promotion on its Play Store ecosystem-including Play Protect-is laudable and certainly making a difference. As for this one specifically, McAfee warns that “we expect this new variant to be highly impactful because it infects devices simply by being installed without execution.” We have also seen a wider warning about copycat apps, which echoes what we’re seeing here. We have seen VajraSpy, SpyLoan and Xamalicious. In the early 1940s, nearly 800 of the more than 1,500 patients at the state mental hospital in Rochester had undergone electroshock therapy, which suggests that they received the treatment regardless of their condition. The prevalence of experimental treatments was astounding. Many of the patients were not even diagnosed with mental illnesses, Schey found, but were sent away by family members for personal reasons. Schey described women strapped to wooden benches, "like dogs in a kennel," their hair shaved off and left unattended for days at a time. Yet it was Schey who became indignant at the inhumane conditions in the hospitals, and persuaded a group of reform-minded Unitarians to make it a central focus of their efforts to improve the human condition.įortunately, Schey kept detailed personal journals during her time working at the Rochester and Hastings state hospitals from 1946 to 1954, and Foote deploys excerpts from these journals in heart-rending fashion. Schey's name does not appear in the many press accounts and official records of the time. Drawing heavily from primary documents, Foote argues that the seeds of change were laid by a little-known daughter of poor Norwegian immigrants, Engla Schey, who took a job in a mental hospital as a low-paid attendant. Luther Youngdahl, who famously lit a giant bonfire of straitjackets and other restraints on the grounds of the state mental hospital in Anoka while condemning the "barbaric devices" as "witchcraft."įoote breaks new ground by unearthing the grass-roots origins of the postwar reforms to Minnesota's mental health system. Many of the official historical accounts of the postwar reforms to Minnesota's mental health system focus on politicians such as Gov. Foote also weaves a dense and rich narrative about how a small group of selfless citizens defied these elites and built a statewide social movement. Setting her story against the backdrop of the enormous stigma attached to mental illness in the early 20th century, Foote describes the arrogance of an entrenched elite of psychiatrists and state administrators who resisted the input of outsiders and stuck with barbaric methods, including prefrontal lobotomies, long after they were discredited. Her exhaustively researched book gives compelling evidence that even by the standards of the time, Minnesota's system of segregated mental institutions was backward, barbaric and particularly resistant to social change. If these modern-day reformers wish to understand the perils of isolating people in controlled environments, they should begin by reading an extraordinary new book on the history of mental health care reform in Minnesota, "The Crusade for Forgotten Souls" by Susan Bartlett Foote. President Donald Trump echoed their arguments this year when he suggested that mass shootings like the one in Parkland, Fla., could be prevented by building and reopening more psychiatric facilities.īut those pining for a return to an era when more than half a million Americans were confined to segregated mental hospitals - often for life - should at first confront the institutions' tragic history, and the monumental effort it took to dismantle a discriminatory system that was responsible for decades of abuses. Over the past few years, as stories of people with mental illnesses languishing in jails and prisons have accumulated, a destructive narrative has begun to take shape.Ī number of respected bioethicists and psychiatrists have lamented that America's massive effort to deinstitutionalize mental hospitals went too far, too fast, and they have issued frank calls for bringing back the asylums that were mostly shuttered by the 1960s.
